Painting and studying art created a new universe for
me, provided a world of my own filled with unimaginable journeys, and an
invaluable education akin to nothing I had ever known before. It opened
my eyes, healed my heart and soul, and gave me a sense of endless hope.
When I walked into an art gallery for the first time, some twenty-five
years ago, it was as if the night skies lit up on the 4th of July.
Starbursts of all colors and shapes were in my mind and before my eyes.
I stood witness to a form of beauty I have never seen before. That
moment marked a transition and turning point in my life.
The painting process fills me with a sense of peace and offers me a
place to be at one with the cosmic universe. It has given me a beautiful
reason to dream, and a means of transferring inner emotions and visions
into an outward expressions for all to share. Art, to me, is a language.
Although words are not audible, the message is clear and its power is
undeniable.
I once believed artists used only brushes and
paints to create new paintings, but have since learned that the creative
process begins in one's mind hastened along by feelings in the heart and
soul. Once
artists learn the various techniques available, hopefully each will
develop his own style. The act of creating new paintings is, for me, almost an
unconscious act. The process of painting each new picture is never the
same and is always a challenge. Boredom does not exist in this realm.
Artists work with their imagination, thoughts,
and quite often, their dreams. Once the brush touches the surface of the
paper or canvas, the painting seems to come alive and takes over — it is
a world like no other. The artist is quite virtually taken on an
unlimited, boundless journey while the painting itself chooses where it
wishes to go. In other words, the painting is totally in control. When
the painting is finished, the artist is left filled with a sense of
humility, amazement, fulfillment, and peace.
Mostly self taught, I paint scenes from nature and architectural
structures. Many times, scenes come to me in my dreams, enhanced by my
feelings and emotions. While watercolor is my favorite medium, sometimes
I use oils, acrylics, and pen and ink.
Throughout the years, I have maintained a home, been a wife
and mother, and worked as a newspaper staff writer. I graduated Cum
Laude from Mount Olive College with a B.S. Degree in Business
Administration: Management and Organizational Development.
Living in rural Eastern North Carolina in a small community near
the Town of Beulaville, which is near the coastal City of Wilmington, offers me a
never ending variety of things to paint. To the east, the Atlantic Ocean,
a thirty minute drive; to the west, the Blue Ridge Mountains, only a few hours
ride.
My trademark is a flower–the iris, my mother's favorite. My website is
dedicated to the memory of my mother, my only brother, and my father. I have
no sisters. I want my art to be a legacy not only for me, but
for them as well. Thanks and appreciation go to my husband and my
daughter.
